Dining in Dar

There are several places to eat out in Dar. From Swahili restaurants to Ethiopian, Nigerian, Indian, Lebanese the list is not endless but they are quite a number :-). Ok I know I know you're new and still trying to find new friends. Well then, there's an established group on Facebook called Dining in Dar that visits a new restaurant every week and keeps a list of all the places they have been. But I guess they tend to revisit their fave places. As of today the group members have been to 300+ restaurants. All you need to do is join the group and look out for an invite by the host. Easy huh? Motor insurance is relatively cheap in Tanzania but it does depend on the value of your motor vehicle and what type of insurance you are looking for e.g. Third Party, Third Party Fire and Theft or Comprehensive and the usage of the vehicle e.g. private or commercial.

 I would highly recommend that you go with a reputable company! Cheap and cheerful won't cut it in Tanzania because at the time of a claim you may really regret getting something cheap.

For peace of mind I would suggest that you get your insurance through a good insurance broker! they won't charge you a fee for their services because they are paid their fees from the insurance companies. The insurance market in Tanzania is controlled by brokers and therefore we have access to great rates which you as an individual would not be able to get, also in the time of a claim the broker will coordinate everything and advise you accordingly so that your claim is dealt with swiftly.


Please be advised that under the new insurance premium payment laws all motor insurance is on a cash and carry basis, this means that when picking up your documents you need to pay the full premium.

Getting around

Dar es Salaam roads are not that great but OK for the main routes. The main roads are ok and close to town so riding a bike may be hard on some roads,public transportation- also known as dala dala (public van/bus) might take an hour to get somewhere that a car could do in 20 mins. Also bajaj are easy to get around in like local taxi.

Swimming in the Ocean 

Common beaches include: coco beach but may not be so clean at times. Lots of expats engage in kite surfing here.

One of the safest and cleanest beach is kunduchi.

In Kigamboni island the water feels and probably is cleaner the further south you go.

Badminton

There is a badminton club in Zanaki Street opposite Nima's Paan Houses, you can go there and see if they will allow you to use their facilities otherwise you can just be a member.

Hi, there is a group that meet on Thursday evenings at the Coloseum and run about 5 kms (I think at 5.30) and there is the Hash House Harriers group which is fun and a good way to meet people. They run every Monday from different locations run is usually 5-7 kms. There is a walk as well. Food and drinks afterwards. All this for 12,000. (Heather Steale IN)

VISA

One can enter the country with a normal tourist visa (you should also be able to get that on arrival at the airport) and then apply for the residence permit at the immigration office once you're here.

From applying till you get the visa it takes a while, so you should plan with 1 or 2 months until you have your actual visa and you are not allowed to work until then.

Moving personal effects to Tanzania

For you to be able to bring in your personal effects into Tanzania, you need first and foremost to have a 2 year work permit which will allow you to bring your goods duty and vat free. In the absence of this, you will pay duty at the rates ranging between 25-35% plus18%VAT.
Note that all the items you will be bringing in have to be used items, if during verification of your goods they find any new items, you will be required to pay duty on these.
You have a grace period of 90 days from date of first entry into Tanzania during which you can import your goods duty free, so ensure that you manage to get your work permit within this period and also get your goods shipped during this period.
I would suggest you use movers as they will assist you with the documentation required.

Clearance of sea consignments in Dar es salaam takes about 14 days from arrival of vessel provided documents are made available early, however, at the moment the port is congested and it is taking vessels over a week to berth when they arrive in Dar, you will need to make contingency plans with regards to household goods as you might not get your creature comforts at the expected time.

Good schools in Dar include the International School Tanzania(IST)  which offers Elementary and Secondary education including the IB programme. Another school offering the IB is Dar es Salaam International Academy (DIA) which is good in swimming and football. Agakhan Mzizima Secondary School has a solid academic reputation. HOPAC (Heaven of Peace) is also a good Christian school in Mikocheni which is an area with both locals and expats living in it. Reader Rabbits  is very good too having British Curriculum. Safety Tips

Dar es salaam is generally a safe place to live in however a few normal precautions must be taken.

1. Keep any flashy jewellery out of sight when walking around on the streets or the beach area.
2. Always keep your valuables e.g. iphones, tablets, laptops insight. Never leave your valuables e.g. laptops in the car.
3. It is advisable to have a good fence and security guards where you live.
